The basics of working with molten glass will be covered in this eight-week class. From blowing, blocking, and shaping, to using specialized hand tools, this class will give you a good base on which to build the skills necessary to create functional and artistic objects. Demonstrations of basic techniques will be plenty, as will time to practice in teams of two. Eight weekly sessions, no prerequisite.

You’ll learn how to assemble petals to create lifelike flowers and tips for adding details and personal touches to your sculptures.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have created your own collection of stunning paper flower sculptures that you can display at home or give as thoughtful handmade gifts.
This workshop is perfect for anyone interested in exploring the art of paper crafting or looking for a fun and relaxing creative activity. No prior experience is necessary—all skill levels are welcome!

In this class, students will learn how to sculpt small fruits and vegetables out of borosilicate glass to create small glass plant markers. Students will use a torch to melt and shape glass and tools to sculpt the glass.
These markers will be a lovely addition to house plants or an amazing, handcrafted way to mark the start of plants you're growing!

Creating tiny glass hearts is a fun introduction to sculpting with glass. Using rods of borosilicate glass and bench-mounted flameworking torches, students will learn how to melt and shape glass. Different methods of applying color will be covered.
Students will learn how to safely operate a flameworking torch and how to use the flame to melt and shape borosilicate glass into heart shapes. We will also experiment with applying frit and stringer to the hot glass for added color and decoration.
Students will make several small (3/4"-1") glass hearts.

What are the narratives we create that can continue to evolve over time? In this hand-building class, we will explore personal storytelling in sculpture. Each piece will be as unique as the maker. Working from photographs or drawings, we’ll use basic slab and modeling techniques to render a sculpture considering composition, surface, and meaning. We will also make one-part plaster press molds to ornament our creations.

Polymer clay is the perfect medium to explore a variety of surface treatments and forms. It’s a forgiving, affordable, and satisfying material to work with. It is also lightweight, requires simple tools, and not much workspace.
In this workshop, we’ll explore black-and-white image transfers, texturing, and markmaking in both uncured and cured clay, adding pigments and more. (Cane making and faux surfaces won’t be covered.) Participants will start on day 1 making a simple brooch to get familiar with the material and process. For the rest of the workshop, you can build on that idea, make additional wearable pieces, or explore small sculpture.
Throughout the workshop, weʻll cover proper conditioning of clay, mixing colors, curing (baking) clay, sanding/finishing, attaching parts, and adding jewelry findings. There will also be a focus on design decisions that turn your ideas into reality.
Polymer clay pieces can be added to other work or used in conjuction with other materials. Despite the focus on surface, we can also explore how to create 3-D work, such as wrapping clay around forms.
No polymer clay experience is necessary.

Learn to combine flame-working with fusing that will bring your work to a new level. This class will focus on making “design elements” in the torch, allowing you to produce fused glass that really stands out. After warming up with demos and practice time in the flame studio, students will “cross over” to the warm shop, designing and firing projects using flame-worked elements. Techniques will be shown to help create imagery that isn’t possible with standard fusing materials. Discussions will cover equipment setup and operation.
No experience is required, but many techniques will be useful for experienced students.

You will be creating a beautiful decorative lantern with fused panels to enjoy outdoors or indoors.
You will learn basic fusing concepts in this class. Students will create four custom fused glass panels using frit, stringers, nuggets, and enamel paints.
Students will make four fused panels to insert into a wrought iron lantern 11"h x 6"w x 6"d. The class includes all supplies and the lantern.
Glass will be fired outside of class and ready for pick up at the Schack Art Center at a later date.
