Creating tiny glass hearts is a fun introduction to sculpting with glass. Using rods of borosilicate glass and bench-mounted flameworking torches, students will learn how to melt and shape glass. Different methods of applying color will be covered.
Students will learn how to safely operate a flameworking torch and how to use the flame to melt and shape borosilicate glass into heart shapes. We will also experiment with applying frit and stringer to the hot glass for added color and decoration.
Students will make several small (3/4"-1") glass hearts.

Week one, we will focus on safety, tools, and colors, and students will get the opportunity to make small solid pieces. Week two will focus on building with pieces and welding techniques. Week three will focus on hollow work, how to weld hollow glass, and finishing off projects from the previous weeks.

After practicing pulling stringer and making dots, we will put everything together to make cute little bee beads! Each student will also have the opportunity to make a bee houseplant decoration or two by creating a bee on the end of a thin stainless steel rod. As time permits, everyone may also try out small glass flower presses.
