Join us for a two-day adventure in watercolor painting, where you’ll gain confidence in your techniques and get a chance to truly connect with nature and other artists. This workshop is perfect for beginners or anyone who wants to experience the freedom of painting outdoors while learning new skills and tips for capturing the beauty around you.
We’ll begin our workshop at the Schack Art Center before we venture to (weather permitting) the Arboretum at Legion Parl and Hibulb Overlook to paint. Painting from life provides a rich, sensory experience that can’t be matched by working from photographs or indoors, and being out in nature fosters a sense of connection with both your surroundings and your fellow en plein air enthusiasts.
Throughout the weekend, you’ll learn essential watercolor techniques such as washes, gradients, color theory, glazing and lifting. You’ll focus on capturing the colors and textures of natural elements like trees, skies, and water, learning to embrace the unpredictability of watercolor and use it to create expressive, dynamic work.
This class offers the perfect balance of hands-on instruction, creative exploration, and social connection. You’ll leave not only with a deeper understanding of watercolor but also with new friends who share your love for art and the outdoors.
All materials are provided—just bring your enthusiasm, a portable seat or cushion, and your curiosity for the world around you!
